The most valuable professional relationships are never transactional. Why proximity and trust build networks that conferences and apps never will.

Networking is one of the most overused and least understood words in professional life. It conjures conferences, business cards and the strained transactionalism of people trying to extract value from strangers. That version of networking is largely worthless. The version that matters looks nothing like it.

Trust Cannot Be Rushed

The relationships that actually move a career or a company are built on trust, and trust is a function of time and proximity. It accrues through repeated, low-stakes contact — the shared meals, the casual conversations, the observed behaviour over months — not through a single well-rehearsed pitch at an event.

This is why the most valuable networks tend to form not at conferences but in communities: places where accomplished people are simply around one another, long enough and often enough for genuine trust to form. Proximity does what no app can.

The Power of the Adjacent Field

The most useful connections are frequently not in one's own industry but adjacent to it. A founder learns more from a doctor, an artist and an investor at the same table than from a room full of other founders. Different fields carry different assumptions, and the collision of perspectives is where original thinking begins.

A deliberately diverse community — men accomplished in genuinely different disciplines — is therefore worth more than any single-industry network. It supplies not just contacts but new ways of seeing.

Give Before You Take

The final principle is the oldest: the strongest networks are built by those who contribute before they extract. Generosity — an introduction, a piece of advice, a genuine interest in another's work — compounds into a reputation that opens doors far more reliably than any request ever could.

In a small, settled community of peers, this dynamic flourishes naturally. People help one another because they know one another, and because they will meet again at dinner. That is networking that actually matters — and it cannot be manufactured, only lived.
