Why Ten Residents, and No More

Most residences and clubs grow as large as demand allows; scale is treated as success. A residence limited deliberately to ten men runs against that instinct, and the limit is not an accident of property size but a considered decision about what a community is for. The number matters more than it might first appear.

There is a natural ceiling to how many people one can truly know — not recognise, but know: their character, their history, their moods and their standards. Anthropologists have long observed that meaningful groups stay small, and that beyond a certain size, community fragments into cliques and acquaintance replaces friendship.

Ten sits comfortably within the range of genuine mutual knowledge. It is small enough that no one is a stranger and large enough that the company never feels thin. Every resident can know every other resident properly, which is the precondition for real trust.

A strict limit also protects the character of the whole. Each place is consequential, which means each admission can be considered with care. There is no pressure to fill rooms, no dilution to meet a growth target, no drift in standards as numbers climb. Scarcity keeps the selection serious.

This is why membership is by application and why the answer is often no. The limit only means something if it is genuinely enforced.

The deepest reason for the number is atmosphere. Ten men living well together form something closer to a household than an institution — a shared table, a common rhythm, a set of relationships rather than a set of transactions. Add fifty more and that texture disappears entirely.

The limit of ten is, in the end, a promise: that this will remain a community and never become a crowd. It is the single decision from which the entire character of the residence follows.
